EnSave Tours Tennessee to Promote Energy Efficiency for Poultry Farms

Richmond, VT, November 2012

Representatives from EnSave, Inc. spent several days in October traversing the state of Tennessee as a guest of the Tennessee Poultry Association. President Craig Metz and Program Development Specialist Lauren Chase drove 1,000 miles in 3 days in order to meet with hundreds of poultry growers. The topic: making poultry houses more energy efficient and saving growers money.

When Tennessee Poultry Association Executive Director Dale Barnett heard that EnSave could help identify 10-35% energy savings for his members, his ears perked up. “Every grower is looking to save money, and so when I learned that there is USDA money available for energy audits AND implementation, I knew it sounded like something our members would want to hear about,” says Barnett.

So far, his members agree. Keith Chamberlain of Ocoee, TN received an Agricultural Energy Management Plan, commonly called a farm energy audit, from EnSave in 2011. The plan, which was paid for largely with USDA funds, identified several opportunities that could save him over $10,000 per year. “We can’t make money if we have to keep paying these energy prices,” says Keith, which is why he has applied for additional USDA funding to implement his projects.

Fortunately, Tennessee poultry growers have heard the importance of energy efficiency loud and clear, which is why EnSave has generated over 60 audits in the state in the past two years alone. “We have enjoyed our trip and the chance to meet so many of the growers we’ve worked with over the years,” said Craig Metz. “These producers are hard working men and women and it has been our pleasure to talk with them about ways to reduce operating costs and get financial assistance to help them do so.”

EnSave encourages other farmers to sign up for an Agricultural Energy Management Plan by calling them at (800) 732-1399, or signing up at their local USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service office. Deadlines for applications are coming up soon, so producers should act fast in order to secure their best chance of receiving an energy audit this year.

Retired Dairy Specialist Finds Niche with Farm Energy Audit Tool

Richmond, VT, November 2012
When upstate New York dairy equipment dealer Rick McClenning retired after 30 years in business, he knew he wanted to keep busy. “After selling the dairy services business, I wanted to stay involved with my customer base and continue to utilize my technical skills for their benefit, while still maintaining the flexibility afforded by retirement.”
He found a natural fit for his abilities and interests by becoming involved with EnSave, Inc., the nation’s leading implementer of agricultural energy efficiency programs and provider of farm energy audits. Rick licenses EnSave’s Farm Energy Audit Tool (FEAT), a software program that provides farm energy audits within EnSave’s certification as a technical service provider for the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service.
With the USDA providing financial assistance for Agricultural Energy Management Plans and implementation of energy efficiency recommendations, the time is ripe for motivated individuals to become involved in providing this service to farmers. Trouble is, many highly skilled people do not have the engineering qualifications necessary to perform those audits, nor do they have the time to develop their own automated calculation tools. The FEAT enables people like Rick to provide farm energy audits that meet the highest standards while leveraging EnSave’s twenty years of expertise in farm energy auditing and reputation as the industry leader.
When asked what he wished he knew before he started using the FEAT tool, Rick replied: “I wish I’d known it would all work so well! I was cautious in making commitments this year, and now know that I could do many more audits than I originally thought.” Indeed, Rick is on track to complete at least 50 audits in 2013. With EnSave paying FEAT licensees for every audit completed, this will provide a nice side income for Rick while allowing him to connect with former customers and contacts.
EnSave is currently hosting free demonstrations of the FEAT software for interested individuals. For more information, contact Lauren Chase at (800) 732-1399.
